Corn Day...Every Day

I'm getting ready to go to my Mother's to help with a painting project and I'm really excited about it. Why? Well, my sister and a family friend will be there and something about the whole thing made me think of Corn Day.

Growing up, Corn Day was one of the highlights of my summer vacation. It was the day when Mama, Granny, Aunt Pearl and 'Thul'...her name was Ethel but we called her Thul--never to her face--it was Ms Posey to her face...allowed my two sisters and me into the inner circle of women. Of course Bertha was there, too...there's always been a Bertha!

I remember it so vividly. We sat in a circle under the Mulberry tree processing ear after ear of corn that mother would pull from the garden and from the corn field. I liked to hack the ends off the ears and pass them on to my sisters for husking and silking, then the women would cut it off in tiny slices. (Bertha just sat on a tree limb and did her nails and listened to the goings ons...that's Bertha!)

And while hacking was fun in and of itself...it was the conversations that made it a day to look forward to. This was the one day of the year that we were actually privy to gossip. Now, I'm certain that they didn't reveal any juicy stuff...for a young girl, just being there was enough.

Bertha and I were talking about it this morning...just remembering how much fun it was to work so hard, in the full heat of the summer, swatting flies and getting itchy corn silk all over you. Anyway, Bertha says that anything can be fun when you focus on the good stuff. She pointed out that as a child I chose to focus on the joy of being with the women and feeling grown-up instead of focusing on the negative aspects of the day. She reminds me that I have the same choice every day...no matter what I am doing...whether it's writing my blog or washing dishes...there's always an up side to it.

And you know, she's right...well she's always right...just ask her! What about you? What are you focusing on today? It's my promise that if you focus on the fun stuff you'll have more fun along the way! Let's make it Corn Day...every day!

Need help? Loving Life Coaching with Bertha can help you shift your focus and change your life. We'd love to work with you!

Oh...I've got to run...they may start without me...and I don't want to miss the juicy gossip! LOL!!

Who would you get if you crossed Lucy with a popular talk show host?  Why Bertha, of course!  A zany redhead, who is always up to something and drags her sidekick along with her while she's dispensing down-home wisdom and perky advice for finding balance and joy in one's life.  Throw in a conniving nemesis, an antagonistic cat, lime green spandex and high-heels and you've got a book that's sure to tickle your funny bone and leave you wearing your thinking cap as you read and reread each vignette.
