My friend recently chided me that I was becoming 'one of those grandmothers'. Ignoring her remark, I got in the car and drove the eight hours for a visit with my granddaughter. And I’m glad that I did.
It is remarkable how quickly a newborn changes. I know as a new parent the days blur into one another and you aren’t quite sure when the change actually took place. That’s why they make baby books! But when you’ve been away for three weeks or months, it is so easy to see the difference.
I mentioned this to Bertha and asked why I don’t seem to be able to change as quickly as the baby is. Bertha laughed to herself so that she didn’t wake the baby in her lap as she explained to me that I am changing just as quickly as the baby. We all are. Each of us wakes up to a new day and new choices every morning. But, unlike the baby, most of us aren’t so willing to make different choices. We just keep choosing the same things over and over again so it doesn’t look like things are changing.
She also pointed out that just like new parents our days blur by and we don’t notice change as it is taking place. Sometimes it is months before we realize that we’ve changed our behavior or attitude even though we’ve been making changes every day.
I had to ask, “Have I changed since you’ve known me?”
Bertha handed me a 'baby book' with my name on it, “See for yourself!” Opening the book I noted pages for, First Smile After Divorce, First Turned Over New Attitude, First Step Towards Financial Independence, First Lock of Gray Hair, First Book Written and Published, First Saw Myself As...
What pages are in your 'baby book'? Take some time today to savor the memories. Bertha and I would love to hear from you!

Who would you get if you crossed Lucy with a popular talk show host? Why Bertha, of course! A zany redhead, who is always up to something and drags her sidekick along with her while she’s dispensing down-home wisdom and perky advice for finding balance and joy in one’s life. Throw in a conniving nemesis, an antagonistic cat, lime green spandex and high-heels and you’ve got a book that’s sure to tickle your funny bone and leave you wearing your thinking cap as you read and reread each vignette.
