Weight a Minute!

Yeah! Thanks to Bertha's encouragement, I have lost 25 pounds. Now, I know that is big...but what is really big is that I haven't suffered in the process!

I know you are getting curious about how I did it...and I'm going to tell you. The first thing I did was to put a mirror facing out in my pantry and my refrigerator. Bertha read about this little trick in Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life By Karen Rauch Carter and thought we should try it. I must confess that I was more than a tad bit skeptical...but Bertha was insistent...as only Bertha can be...so in the mirrors went. I didn't attempt to change anything about my life but every time I opened the pantry or fridge I'd say to myself, "I don't know how this is working but I know it is working." And let it go at that.

Before long, I got the urge to add more fiber to my diet and just eat a bit healthier. Nothing major, just adding a salad when I went out for pizza and figuring out how to get between 35 and 40 grams of fiber in my diet each day. I allowed myself to eat anything that I wanted as long as I got the fiber in. I also started drinking at least 64 ounces of water daily. Again, I could drink anything else I wanted as long as I got in the water.

Now...if you haven't ever tried this...let me just tell you...when you're eating enough fruits and veggies and whole grains to get 40 grams of fiber...you're just not that hungry for junk food anymore. And surprise of all surprises...I lost my sweet tooth! The same was true about the water...after about 2 weeks...I gave up diet drinks completely...something I have never been able to do. All the while...I knew that I could have either sweets or sodas if I wanted them...I just didn't want them.

Next...I felt the urge to move a bit more. One of my clients mentioned that she had been doing a Shapely Secrets video...the next day I saw an infomercial on it...and decided to try it...it's isometric exercises and only takes 7 minutes a day...even I could do that. From there, I started wanting to walk in the afternoons...nothing serious...just 15 minutes or so.

And then the magic started happening...I was losing weight...and my clothes were getting too big...and people were noticing...and I was loving it! Bertha and I got to go shopping in the petite department again...and things actually were the right length...this was just too much fun! Of course Bertha talked me into buying lots of new shoes to go with my new outfits...we are talking Bertha!

Before I knew it...I was cooking 99% of my own meals...using mostly fresh ingredients...I even planted an herb garden...and I am loving what I eat. The best part is...I feel good...I feel healthy!

Now...I hate to admit it...but I still have a weighs to go...but I'm not in a hurry...1-2 pounds per week is the recommended amount to lose and that's exactly what I've been averaging.

I asked Bertha why she thought I was successful this time when I've tried and failed so many times before. She said that it was because I never gave anything up...I started out by adding...and then gradually lost my desire for the things that weren't serving me so well. That way I never felt deprived. I never went on a diet...so I wouldn't go off of it...I just added fiber and water and a bit of exercise...nothing so complicated about that!

Now...I'm not a doctor...and you should never change your eating habits or try a diet without checking with your doctor to be sure it isn't contraindicated for you...but...that being said...coaching with Bertha may be just what the doctor ordered to help you kick start your weight loss program! Jingle Bells
The days are shorter and baby it's cold outside! Christmas is definitely approaching. Coming home in the late afternoon I frequently find Bertha wrapped in her favorite lime green throw, sipping hot tea and glued to an afternoon talk show.

I was running a little later than usual today. Loaded down with bags, I managed to unlock the front door, step forward and crash into Bertha sending groceries flying in every direction.

I dropped the few bags I still had control of in the nearby chair, "Bertha, what are you doing?"

Bertha reached down to retrieve a run away orange before it hid under the sofa, "I'm going Christmas shopping!"

Indeed, she was dressed for holiday shopping in skin-tight red velvet capris and matching form-fitting, décolleté jacket trimmed in white faux fur. I did a quick double take, that fur closely resembled the cat! Her look was completed by red, very pointy-toed, jingle-belled stilettos. Perhaps this is the look you get when you cross Dollywood with the North Pole. I could almost see the delight on Santa's face when Mrs. C. came into the workshop dressed like that--ooh, la, la naughty is nice! I brought my focus back to reality, "Who are you shopping for? I thought we checked everyone off our list last week."

"Oh we did. But I was just watching Oprah and she gave all these wonderful gifts to everyone in her audience..."

"Oh, I hate I missed it. I always love to see all the neat things that she gives everyone. But what's that got to do with you going out shopping again? Did you see something you just couldn't live without?"

Bertha shooed the cat off her soapbox. She quickly relocated her 'perch' as the disgruntled feline meandered by on its way to the other room. I was relieved to see that it was fully fluffy and white.

Bertha's stilettos jingled as she climbed aboard the soapbox, grabbing my attention just in time for her latest dissertation. "The show just got me thinking how nice it would be to share gifts with all of our friends who are reading our blog. They are sort of like our audience."

"That is a wonderful idea. I just don't understand how we can do it--there must be millions of them!"

"Not to worry," Bertha waved her hands reassuringly, "I've got it all figured out. Now leave my soapbox right here and I'll be back in a few..." With that, she hopped down and was out the door leaving me to put up the groceries and ponder exactly what she was up to.

True to her word, Bertha was home and on the soapbox quicker than a three year-old can rip through a stack of presents on Christmas morning. Her purchases were stuffed to overflowing in a large lime green gift bag with lots of lime green and flamingo pink ribbon. "I think I'll give the gifts to you and let you describe them for our readers. That way they will get virtual gifts."

"If you say so...I never heard of virtual gifts. And I hope I don't get any this year. I like real stuff!"

"Then you can keep he real stuff after you describe it. How's that for a deal?" Bertha reached in the bag and pulled out just about the strangest thing I had ever seen. It was a cap...I guess. The part that fit on your head was bright pink and must have been the body of a flamingo, because the neck and head--beak and all--went right out the top of it. And there were legs that hung down with duck looking feet. "Ta-dah!"

"Oh, my, I'm sorry I asked for the real stuff! What in the world is that?" I ducked as Bertha threw it at me.

"Well, its is a flamingo cap of course." Bertha looked proud of her purchase.

"But why would you get a flamingo cap for our readers? Even a virtual flamingo cap is pretty weird!" I examined it more closely and couldn't resist putting it on my head.

"See, I knew you'd like it! Besides it has a great purpose." She paused as I looked int he mirror. "Flamingos remind me to believe in myself. When I see a flamingo I know that I can be or do or have anything that I believe. You haven't forgotten the trip to Miami have you?

"Of course not. You believed you were going and you did. And of course there were flamingos planted all over our yard at the time!" Wearing the flamingo must have made me wise. I continued, "So the virtual gift you want to give our readers is the gift of believing in themselves?"

"Absolutely, I knew you'd catch on!"

Bertha reached in the bag and pulled out a pair of black high-heeled sandals with two rows or rhinestones. They were just like the ones I had borrowed from her for my friend's wedding a few years ago. "I'll gladly take those; just don't throw them at me." I held my hands across my face...just in case. "Why high-heels?" I asked through the little triangle formed by my outstretched fingers.

"Oh you know the better mood I'm in...the higher my heels are. That's why the Joy Meter in our Where the Joys Are Journal is various heel heights."

"You're right. You've always said that a good mood starts one thought at a time. That's how we get our emotional energy soaring. Here's wishing our friends days and days of stilettos!" I reached over and snagged the shoes before she changed her mind and kept them. "What's next?"

On cue, Bertha produced a canary yellow bikini with orange polka-dots. "How about this little beauty?"

"The operative word being l-i-t-t-l-e!" I mumbled under my breath. I hoped she didn't intend for me to wear that thing. But it was sailing through the air in my direction faster than eight flying reindeer.

"Relax; you don't have to wear it today. It's just a reminder of the time it takes between when you decide you want something and when you actually get it. Think what a mess it would be if we had a desire and it immediately happened."

The thoughts of sixteen new cars sitting in the driveway made me smile, but the thoughts of my pants falling off in the mall when I suddenly became a size eight made me laugh out loud. "You've got a point there, sister. Let's give them the gift of relaxing about their desires."

Next Bertha pulled out tragedy and comedy theater masks. "Okay, I'm stumped on this one. What do the masks represent?"

"Truth," Bertha held up tragedy, "We always have a choice what we think about. We don't have to think about tragedy just because it's true." She dropped it behind her and raised up comedy, "There are so many more wonderful thrughs we can think about..."

"You mean like instead of focusing on the price of gas we can think about how wonderful our cars are and how your '56 Thunderbird is such an awesome piece of machinery?"

"Exactly, let's give them the choice of truth."

Bertha dug down in the bag and came out with a small round thing that resembled a pocket watch. "For those days when we aren't sure where our lives are going, here's a compass for happiness."

Bertha must have realized that I was confused and continued, "You know that when I'm happy and I feel good that my life is on track."

"I see, the compass reminds you that where you are going is determined by how you are feeling in the moment." I reached over and took the compass to see if it was pointing due "H". Of course it was!

"The next item up for bid is rose colored glasses, " Bertha laughed as she held them up. "These are perfect for seeing things through eyes of appreciation. I wish appreciation for all of our readers."

I did a quick summary of the gifts: belief, emotional energy, relaxing, truth, happiness, and appreciation. "Bertha do you realize that if we take the first letter of each gift they spell B-E-R-T-H-A?"

She grinned knowingly. Before she could answer, the gift bag started shaking and carrying on something fierce. Bertha reached over to settle it...but she was too late. The bag turned over on its side and the cat bolted out and into the other room shooting Bertha an accusing look as it fled. "Now how did the cat get in there? I would never dream of giving the cat away!'

"Yeah, right...and to all a good night!"

Christmas Wish List
I'm getting excited...my daughter and her family will be here this
weekend...which means some Grammy time with my granddaughter who is
now 17 months old.

Of course I've tempered my excitement with some worry...will I be
able to keep this old house (I love it...but it is old and doesn't
have central heating and cooling) warm enough for the baby...will
she feel compelled to discover the true meaning of HOT by placing a
fingertip on the gas heater much as her aunt did at my mother's
over 25 years ago? Will we survive one bathroom on Christmas
Morning when my other daughter (the heater toucher) joins us (along
with her dog)?

And my list of concerns goes on from there...from will I have
anything the baby will eat...to how the granddaughter, grandpup,
and the CAT will get along...and ending with..."I just want
everyone to have a good time!"

Bertha had me write the above list...then she took it and tore off
everything above..."I just want everyone to have a good
time!"...wadded it up...and threw it in the garbage, telling me to
focus on the 'short list' for a change!

Well...after I got over the fact that Bertha had the audacity to
throw away my perfectly warranted worry list...I realized that she
was right on...as usual...I was focusing on all the things I didn't
want to happen instead of what I did want...

So now...

The cat in her fur coat...and I in my flannels...decorated the
trees and hung stockings from the mantles...then sought our soft
bed...where soon visions of my family having a wonderful time
danced through my head...I heard laughter and whispers...saw
huggers and kissers...smelled meat that was roasted...tasted drinks
we had toasted...the house felt  cozy...the baby's cheeks rosy...we
all got a shower...Bertha's beau sent her flowers...the pup and the
cat were new best friends...this seems like a good place...I think I will end...

With one special wish from Bertha and me...may you
always believe that the things you are wanting...you'll surely
receive!

Trick or Treat
Well, it's almost Halloween and Bertha's getting ready for Trick or Treat. I know...she's a little old for that kind of thing...but that never stopped her before. She says that she donates the candy to charity...but I've noticed that she usually puts on a couple of pounds the first week of November...if you know what I mean...

Anyway...she asked if I'd like a sneak preview of her costume...and of course I said "YES"...so she ran to her room...changed out of her lime green spandex capris, flamingo pink tube top and pink feathered stilettos and came back dressed in a gray business suit and black loafers...

I was a bit taken aback...I had expected something scary...and there's nothing scary about a business suit...

Unless you're Bertha, that is! Bertha says that a gray business suit and loafers is about as far from who she is as you can get...and that the scariest thing in life...is to try to someone that you aren't...

Hey, she has a point there!

Have a great week!

Jane

HELP! My Reputation's in the Toilet!
Bertha just loves feng shui...and since we've just moved into a new...well new to us...house...she has been having a grand old time lining up the energy of the house with her...and my intentions.

Her room just happens to be in the romantic section of the bagua map...so she said she was doing feng shui in hopes for a fun Swede...now I'm not so sure about that...but here's how some of the other rooms played out...

My office is in the creative section...the guest room is helpful people...the living room is career...the kitchen is prosperity...the sun porch is family and friends...the dining room is the center...the porch is learning and new skills...and that leads us to...drum roll please...the bathroom is in the fame and reputation section!

Now...as you might imagine...I was a bit distraught...I mean...hello?...my reputation is in the toilet?...

Bertha laughed and laughed as I frantically looked for feng shui cures for my reputation ills...she pointed out that there's always more than one way to look at things...my reputation is squeaky clean...my reputation is bubbly...her reputation is steamy...(give me a break!)...things are really heating up for my reputation (the hot water heater is in the bathroom closet)...which also lead to there's a lot going on behind the scenes...

Bertha helped me strategically place a red candle in the room with the intention of...You Go Girl...You're On Fire!...and a bright red star with the intention of...I am a STAR...A Bright Shining Star!...and reminded me that in feng shui as in all aspects of our life...we get to choose where we put our focus...on the negatives or the positives...life is supposed to be fun...that's when I realized that there is a throne in there...hello...I'm royalty! We're still laughing about that!

Have a great week!

...If I Knew I Would Succeed...
Last night Bertha visited my As the Pen Spins writing class...she usually goes shopping or has her nails done while I'm teaching...but last night...she dropped in. While she was there she challenged the group to journal on this question for the week...

"What would I do today if I knew I would succeed?"

Now...they of course were supposed to answer this question in relation to their writing...but I tried it this morning in relation to several areas of my life...and it was extremely powerful.

How would I eat today if I knew that I would successfully reach my ideal weight? Would I stop for that ice cream cone that calls me like a Siren every time I pass Dairy Queen...or would I confidently put in my ear plugs (left over from the Bertha story The Killing...curious...then you'd better order the book! LOL!) and drive on by?

What would I do in my business if I knew it would be successful? Would I be calling folks and e-mailing folks about speaking engagements and book signings or would I play another game of Super Collapse! 3?

What would I do in my writing...if I knew that Putting Your Best Foot Forward: Bertha's Guide to Life and Shoes would be a best seller...would I continue to put off doing the final edits...or would I be writing like my pants were on fire...(I don't actually know how that fits...but I said it...so it must...LOL!) I think I'd be writing...don't you?

So today...Bertha's asking you to spend some time journaling the question...

"What would I do today if I knew I would succeed?"

And then she's reminding you...that you can't succeed...if you don't do it...so the challenge is to step out there...

I'd let you know how my journaling turned out...but I've got to find those ear plugs before I drive by Dairy Queen!

Have a great week!

Jane

Light Bulb Moment
Okay...I admit it...I can be a little dense at times...thankfully...I have Bertha around to show me the light bulb moments of life!

You may or may not know that I recently moved...but I did...and I really love the new space that I've moved to. There's just something about it that makes me happy...but...there are a few things that I found less than perfect. One in particular was the light in my bedroom. There's a ceiling fan with a single bulb...I have lamps...but they're more decorative than light producers...so the room has been darker than I prefer.

I haven't let this be too big of a deal...I mean...really I'm only in there to dress or sleep...but it still bugged me just a bit. Last night...I happened to mention it to Bertha...that I wished the room had more light.

You could have blown me over with a feather when she asked if I had considered changing the bulb in the ceiling fan! Well...duh...no...I hadn't thought of that...

You may have seen this coming...it was a 40 watt bulb...it took about 2 minutes to take the bulb out...walk to the kitchen...get a 75 watt bulb...and put it in...

It was such a simple fix...the room is now light and bright...just the way I wanted it all along. Now contrary to your doubts at the moment...I am an intelligent woman...why had this never occurred to me?

Well...Bertha had an answer to that too...and as always it related to life as well. She said that it isn't so much a matter of intelligence as it is a matter of resignation...resignation to the way things are...and just not seeing the possibilities.

Wow! She's right on...as usual...I'm going around changing light bulbs in every dark corner of my world...how about you?

Have a great week!

Loving What I Do!
I just read a post on Boomer Women Speak Forum (www.boomerwomenspeak.com) that essentially asked the question, "Have you been able to do what you love in your life?"

My first response was..."YES! I am doing what I love right now! I love being a writer and a life coach...I love hosting the Loving Life Radio Show...I love weaving this zany character Bertha into everything I do...I love working with women who really want to love their lives."

And that is so true! I do love what I'm doing...but on closer examination...I realized that in the beginning I loved being a nurse and caring for people in that way...it was part of my little girl dream. I loved being a wife (well...part of the time!) and I loved being a mother to my two daughters...I loved staying home with them when they were young and I loved working various jobs...I loved watching them become beautiful young women and going out into the world...I even love having my own space now...just mine...well...except for the cat...and of course Bertha!

Bertha says the wisdom in this...is that what you love is always changing...it's always evolving. It doesn't stay constant...as soon as you're living one dream...a new one is forming...and loving the new doesn't mean you didn't love the old...and loving the present...doesn't mean you won't love the changes of the future.

I'm glad of that...I want to keep loving my life...and I want my dreams to keep growing!

How about you? How are you loving your life? We'd love to hear from you!

Have a great week!

Jane

Pieces-Parts
Wow! We've finally finished moving. You probably didn't even know that we were in the process...because what with painting and packing and cleaning and unpacking...I've totally neglected my blogging...but...it wasn't time wasted! Not only did I move to the next step towards my dream home...I've picked up some insights along the way...thanks to Bertha that is!

One thing that I love about moving is getting to put things together differently in a new space. Pictures get to go in different rooms and nick-knacks find entirely new spots. One thing I've discovered is that the things that I dearly love look great almost anywhere I put them!

Bertha says that's a lot like our lives...every time we make a personal change...we get to rearrange all the parts of ourselves into new patterns and new ideas and new habits. So whether we've changed jobs, gotten into or out of a relationship, had a baby or had our nest emptied...we get to rearrange all our pieces-parts in new ways...and the best parts of us...we dearly love almost anywhere we put them!

I'm sitting here in my new office...and I love it...feeling grateful for how the pieces-parts of my new home and my life have come together!

Have a great week!

Jane

PS...Bertha would love to help you rearrange your pieces-parts! Send us an e-mail (info@berthasize.com) for more information on Coaching with Bertha packages.

Driving Yourself-Care
Many of my clients complain that they just don't have the time to devote to self-care...and sometimes...I must admit...I join in the whine...in fact...I've just moved...and between painting and packing and moving and unpacking...I've had very little time for 'formal' self-care. I complained about it to Bertha and here's what she had to say...

"If you drive a car...you have time for self-care. Someone got the notion that self-care had to be an addition to your already jammed packed day but that's just stressful...not at all what self-care is all about...self-care is all about nurturing your body, mind and spirit...you can combine it with all kinds of activities (even washing dishes...but we won't go there today...I just had my nails done!) We'll stick with the time in the car. Commuting is a great opportunity for self-care! Here are a few things that you can do that will make the drive and your day more pleasant."

Listen to a favorite CD. Choose one that 'takes you back' to a really fun time in your life...such as high school...crank up the volume and sing along...use your hairbrush for a microphone...well maybe not...

Listen to a great book on tape. It's hard to find time to read the classics...let alone the latest Harry Potter...check one out at the Library...and listen to your heart's content!

Learn a new language...this one can be fun especially if you are planning a real or 'virtual' vacation to a new country. Once you've mastered the basics...have fun with it...go somewhere (like the grocery store) and only speak that language...or have a no English allowed (or whatever your native tongue is) party...

Play the 'Ten Things I Love About Me' game...mine usually starts out with...I love that I'm the kind of person who likes to encourage others...and goes from there...if you can't think of ten...start with one...even if it's...I love that I'm the kind of person who will do silly self-care things in the car!

What's your favorite self-care...in or out of the car?

Who would you get if you crossed Lucy with a popular talk show host?  Why Bertha, of course!  A zany redhead, who is always up to something and drags her sidekick along with her while she's dispensing down-home wisdom and perky advice for finding balance and joy in one's life.  Throw in a conniving nemesis, an antagonistic cat, lime green spandex and high-heels and you've got a book that's sure to tickle your funny bone and leave you wearing your thinking cap as you read and reread each vignette.
